The Fogg Dam Region is basically the area along the Arnhem Highway, from Fogg Dam to the Mary River,
which is approximately 110 km from Darwin. It is characterised by subcoastal wetlands,
including the Mary and Adelaide River floodplains and some large lagoons and billabongs.
The region is easily accessed as a day trip from Darwin, or it can be visited on the way to or from
Kakadu National Park. An alternative is to stay at Mary River Park, an eco-tourism resort,
and use this as a base from which to explore the region.
About 230 bird species have been reported from this region.
Apart from the extensive wetlands, there are patches of monsoon forest containing
birds such as Rainbow Pitta and Emerald Dove. Seasonally, Oriental Plover and Little Curlew
can be seen on the open grasslands in this region and in some years Letter-winged Kite may
also be seen hunting over the floodplains and grasslands.
The Marrakai Road, a particularly productive area for birding, runs between the Arnhem and Stuart Highways.
