The Katherine Region covers the area within approximately 100 km radius of the township of Katherine,
which is 300 km south of Darwin. About 240 bird species have been recorded in the Katherine Region,
including the hard to find Red Goshawk, Chestnut-backed Button-quail and Crested Shrike-tit.
The shops and services in Katherine (the third largest centre in the Northern Territory, behind
Darwin and Alice Springs) are adequate to meet most travellers’ needs.
Katherine is a good place to stock up with supplies if travelling to other more isolated areas such as
Kakadu National Park or the southwest Top End. There is hotel accommodation and camping in Pine Creek,
Katherine and Mataranka and camping in Nitmiluk and Elsey National Parks.
